SDN has worked with SOAS University of London (UK) to help map links between artisanal oil refining and other livelihoods, and highlight the ‘benefits’ or incentive structures of those involved in this informal economy.
Artisanal oil refining in the Niger Delta is a damaging activity that has caused pollution and harm to local communities. Despite the negative impacts, shutting down these operations is not a feasible solution, as they provide direct and indirect livelihoods. Instead, our research proposes a mitigation and transformation strategy that focuses on reducing pollution and creating alternative livelihood opportunities, such as solar power generation and exploring productive livelihood opportunities.
