The Digital sector in Nigeria is rapidly growing, driving economic development and creating job opportunities across the country. However, as in many parts of the world, gender inequality persists in the digital economy, leaving women and girls behind.
Our latest research, conducted from May to June 2023, delves into this issue in the Niger Delta region. It explores how the digital gender gap influences employment aspirations, opportunities, and outcomes for women in Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Delta, and Rivers States. With a survey of 9,600 individuals, alongside interviews with key stakeholders, this is the most detailed sub-national study of its kind in Nigeria.
The findings aim to guide policymakers in designing evidence-based strategies to ensure that women and girls are fully included in the digital economy. In addition, we are using the insights gained to develop training programs that address the identified skill gaps. This report contributes to both national and global conversations on the barriers women face in accessing and thriving in the digital space.
