At SDN, we were extremely saddened by the passing of Patrick Naagbanton on the 21st September 2019, following a tragic traffic accident. Patrick was a good friend to SDN and to many of our staff members, past and present. We will miss the passion and insight he brought to his work in the Niger Delta exposing and exploring environmental and human rights issues, the integrity with which he conducted his work, and, not least, his warm friendship and sense of humour. We will also remember him for his talent for writing and poetry.
Patrick was a prominent environmental and human rights activist, who worked with several non-governmental organisations in the Niger Delta. His accomplishments and his positive contribution to the Niger Delta include the establishment of the Port Harcourt-based NGO, Centre for Environment, Human Rights and Democracy (CEHRD) and his investigative journalism.
Patrick worked closely with SDN for many years and was always generous with his help and guidance. In particular, he made a huge contribution to our research and to help further our understanding of the environmental and human rights challenges in the Niger Delta.
We will miss Patrick dearly and extend our sincere condolences to his family, to our friends at CEHRD and the wider human rights community, and all others who knew him.
