In a world where technology is rapidly reshaping industries and economies, acquiring digital skills has become more than just an advantage—it’s a necessity, particularly for women striving to advance in the workplace and economy. In the Niger Delta, where gender disparities in the digital sector persist, SDN has been at the forefront of efforts to bridge the digital gender gap. Through targeted training programmes, SDN aims to empower women and women-owned businesses in the region. Praise, a participant of the digital skills training exemplifies the profound impact of our initiative, demonstrating the transformative power of digital skills, especially for women.
Praise, a graduate of Political Science, a wife and a mother, had been out of the workforce for 5 years due to her household responsibilities. Praise found herself yearning to pursue a new career path. Teaching seemed like a viable option to get back into the workforce, however, she realised it did not align with her aspirations. While considering her options and exploring other things she could do, she came across SDN’s digital skills training program.
Upon starting the training, Praise was inspired by other women in the programme who shared their journey to gaining digital skills, and this gave her a renewed sense of purpose and belonging. Throughout the 12-week training, she wholeheartedly dedicated her time to the programme. Determined to make the most of this opportunity, she graduated as the best student in the digital marketing and content creation course. Speaking about her experience, she said
“ I was truly fascinated by what I was learning and the experience I was gaining. I interacted with many women, which was unusual for me as I don’t usually socialise much. This opportunity allowed me to meet different kinds of women and build connections with them, forming a network of like-minded people. My coach was exceptional. She was a huge motivation for me, not only by teaching us digital marketing but also by sharing practical skills from her own everyday experiences”.
Praise’s dedication did not go unnoticed. Her proficiency in digital skills opened doors to one job and two internship opportunities. Today, she manages several social media accounts and teaches aspiring digital marketers and content creators enrolled in the SDN digital skills training programme. Praise has now found a new career path, imparting her skills to others and thriving as a digital marketer and virtual assistant for three organisations, skillfully integrating her work between in-person and virtual engagements.
Reflecting on her journey, Praise emphasised the important role of digital skills in shaping her new career. She encourages fellow women to seize similar opportunities, recognising the transformative potential of digital literacy. Praise envisions a ripple effect where empowered women become agents of positive change within their families and communities.
“Getting this digital skills opportunity with SDN had put my life on a new pedestal. I am knowledgeable about digital marketing, and whenever I go online, nothing surprises me anymore. I am also happy that I can pass this knowledge on to others. These skills are very beneficial both at work and at home and I encourage fellow women to take advantage of this opportunity. And I am also very grateful to SDN for the opportunity.”
Praise is excited about the journey ahead and looks forward to continuing her growth in digital marketing and content creation. We celebrate her achievements and reaffirm our commitment to continue to support women to gain valuable digital skills to enhance their inclusion in the digital spaces to thrive in the digital world.
