Rivers State Re-Run Elections December 2016

On Saturday 10th December 2016, Rivers state will hold Federal and Legislative rerun elections.  This follows the elections in 2015 where results were anulled due to widespread violence and rigging.

SDN will be following the reruns, observing on election day, and releasing our analysis on this page as events unfold. This page will also be used to house relevant electoral materials released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The struggle between the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) state government and former All Progressives Congress (APC) state government has destabilized the security and economy in Rivers State over the past 18 months.

Violence sponsored by competing political actors and accusations of partisan behaviour continues to undermine confidence in INEC and the electoral system – both locally and nationally (and by extension intenationally)

Continuation of the political conflict could further damage stability and have lasting impacts – ranging from oil production through to a significant escalation of conflict

The Rivers Governor has made claims of:

  • Conspiracy between INEC and former Governor to release results sheets to him
  • Withdrawal of his police escort by the Rivers Police Commissioner
  • Plots by security services to assassinate him during the December 10th election
